#3.  9/11

There are several theories claiming that the September 11 attacks were planned and/or executed by parties other than, or in addition to Al-Qaeda.

Other theories claim that high-level government officials had a lot of information on the attacks in advance, and intentionally ignored them, or even assisted the attackers themselves in carrying them out.

The most prominent theory is that the Twin Towers and World Trade Center collapsed as a result of a controlled demolition, and not structural failure due to the impact of the airplane crash. The popular explanation among conspiracy theorists is that the whole attack was carried out in order to justify the invasions to Afghanistan and Iraq and due to geostrategic interests in the Middle East, such as pipeline plans from the early 1990’s.

Official bodies that investigated the matter, such as The National Institute of Standards and Technology, as well as technology magazine Popular Mechanics, have rejected these claims made by theorists. The civil engineering community, and the official 9/11 committee accept that the impacts of an airplane flying at high speeds, combined with subsequent fires, are what led to the collapse of the towers, rather than controlled demolition. However, theorists claim that the investigations were not thorough enough, or that they were simply held in order to cover-up what really happened.
